The Nanofilter integrates cutting-edge nanotechnology with sand-based water filtration to provide clean, safe drinking water. The process is affordable and sustainable and highly relevant in rural settings across Africa where access to clean water remains a huge challenge. Custom built per region, it gives communities access to existing bodies of water that were previously too polluted to use.
The Nanofilter removes microorganisms which cause waterborne diseases which kills about 7,000 children in Tanzania every year. It also removes excessive fluoride which can harm teeth and bones, found naturally in volcanic rock along Mount Meru and the Rift Valley.
According to WHO, the Nanofilter removes these contaminants by 99.99%. Unlike competing filters, the Nanofilter is made locally and can be customised to meet customer needs. It is affordable and can be easily maintained locally. It is already providing clean and safe water to about 400,000 people and creating employment for approximately 130 people.
